It took some centuries, more specifically the one where actual cars hit the road, before the idea came to a commercial plan. A Dutch Plan. Van Doorne’s Automobiel Fabriek (DAF) built the so-called Variomatic for their DAF 600.
Now what is an Continuous Variable Transmission? A CVT replaces the conventional gears with fixed ratio’s by two pulleys that are connected by a belt or chain. One pulley is connected to the engine (input shaft) and the other to the drive wheels (output shaft). The size of these pulleys can change from small to large, and infinite variations in between. Thus resulting in a continuous and optimum drive.
